The Artist's Way

  1. Visit an artist’s supply shop.
  2. Spend some time outdoors with your journal, sketchbook, craft supplies, etc.
  3. Go for a walk, and take your camera with you to document the experience.
  4. Stop by the library, and check out some CDs.
  5. Set a timer, and spend an hour working on something you’ve been putting off.
  6. Create an artist’s workspace in your home.
  7. See an Oscar-nominated movie or a foreign film.
  8. If you don’t have an artist’s blog, start one.
  9. Visit a “creative” shop that has nothing to do with what you actually do–an art supply store, a fabric shop, a music store.
  10. Grab a stack of magazines, and clip whatever looks interesting or cool to create your own inspiration board.
  11. Support the local arts scene. Go to a local festival, music event, art show, play, museum exhibit, etc.

Reasons to write

NaNoswag

NaNoWriMo is approaching. And I received on e-mail a motivational post (not related to this international contest, but related to writing). Here it is, together with the source:

Hello,
In case you’re in need of motivation, here are some reasons to write…
– To express yourself.
Writing is a chance to cut through the small talk and chatter, to share parts of yourself that are normally hidden in everyday life, to connect with others at the deepest level.
– As a gift to others.
Your writing can bring great pleasure to others, entertain them, distract them from their problems, transport them with beauty, make them feel less alone.
– To make discoveries.
Writing can be a process of exploration.  Start with a character or situation and see where that takes you.  Let your imagination surprise you.
You can write about what you don’t know, what fascinates and bothers you, the questions that keep you up at night.
– To keep yourself company.
When you’re writing, you’re never alone.  You’re engaged in a conversation with your future readers.  And the whole time, voices are speaking in your imagination, the voices of characters, of memories…
– To live more intensely.
Writing makes you observant.  You’re constantly collecting material that you can convert into your creative work.  Your senses sharpen, and the world becomes more vivid.
– To make your time count.
When the year ends, what will you have to show for it?  If you’ve written poems, scenes, stories, memoirs, part of a novel, you will know that your time has been put to good use.
Happy writing,

5,000 writing prompts

I wasn’t sure how to reblog Bryn Donovan’s  post about writing prompts, so I copied it, for any interested writer. Sorry for what written part transferred wrongly – in edit mode, I see them all right…

Goodbye, writer’s block. 5,000 WRITING PROMPTS is available for pre-order on eBook.

20 Easy Poetry Writing Prompts and Exercises!

I love coming up with writing prompts and sharing exercises that have worked for me! That’s why I wrote this book that includes master plots, dialogue and character prompts, setting prompts, and many more ways to spark your creativity.

Ending Writer’s Block: the 2-Week Challenge

If it’s been a while since you’ve been in the writing habit, you’re not alone. Most writers go through dry spells! With my new book, I have an easy challenge that could break the spell.

It’s really simple. Every day for two weeks, you choose a writing prompt from the book at random and write about it for fifteen minutes. (Even very busy people can usually do something for fifteen minutes a day.) Write whatever comes to mind, as fast as you can. It doesn’t have to be good. It doesn’t even have to make sense.

At the end of the two weeks, I bet you’ll find that your creative inspiration is back. You’ll be able to create joyfully and prolifically again.

Click here to pre-order 5,000 WRITING PROMPTS on Kindle.

I hope everything’s going well with you! Happy writing!

Love and light,

Bryn
