Maybe there are others like me, not knowing the difference among subgenres.
There are several kinds of mysteries and many times readers aren’t sure which one to read. We have the Caper Mystery that is usually humorous. The Investigator Mystery has a private investigator or amateur who tries to figure out the crime. Suspense Mystery has tension and keeps the reader guessing but it is slow paced. A Thriller is similar to Suspense except it is fast paced with constant action. In the Hardboiled Mystery, the detective is a professional investigator and it has violence and gruesome details. A Soft-boiled Mystery is the same as a hardboiled but is lighter and doesn’t have as much detail.
Then there’s the Cozy Mystery, which is G-rated, is in a small town and the sleuth is an intelligent woman who investigates the mystery. You find out about her life as she solves the problem and she becomes part of your world. This is…
