Writing a Book – a Legacy for Your Children

Even when you don’t have children, a book is still a legacy. It helps you live after the biological demise.

Author Don Massenzio

daddy daughterIt’s no surprise that my love of reading as a child has turned into a love of writing. My one regret is that I waited so long to become an author. I feel like I have a lot of catching up to do.

Speaking of catching up, my wife and I had very little luck having children early in our marriage. We adopted after 15 years of marriage and then, in 2008, after 23 years of marriage, we welcomed our first infant into the world. My wife had a very healthy pregnancy for a woman in her mid-forties and we welcomed a 9-pound baby girl into the world. This event is one that has solidified our family and has been one of the best events of my life.

Our little girl is ten now and she is maturing in her reading very quickly. She has also caught onto the fact…

17 Common Fantasy Sub-Genres

Very interesting for those who are writing fantasy.

Thoughts on Fantasy

The fantasy genre is rich with a myriad of sub-genres, and each has its own conventions and trends. With the different terms floating around out there it can be easy to confuse or overlook key sub-genres. Finding a succinct list of the most notable ones – particularly a list with definitions and examples – is not always straightforward. So I thought I’d put my reading and researching to use and assemble one.

Gorgona

Gorgona

Gorgona

Întruparea legendei străvechi

ce apare marinarilor

după încetarea furtunii, în amurg.

Prova navei despică elegant valurile.

Tramontana s-a oprit.

Ultima rază de soare o dezvăluie

pieptănându-se pe o stâncă.

– Marele rege Alexandru trăiește? răsună întrebarea.

Gorgona și-a iubit fratele.

Fiindcă a săvârșit o greșeală fatală

doar marea i-a dat adăpost.

Nu bănuiește c-au trecut neguri de veac.

Timonierul o zărește, o aude.

Știe că dacă i-ar spune adevărul

vasul s-ar scufunda.

– Trăiește și domnește!

I-a scăpat.

Vaporul dansează pe valuri,

pierzându-se în zare,

iar sirena, în căutarea altei prăzi,

pieptănându-se din nou,

întreabă amurgul:

– Mai trăiește regele Alexandru?

Vântul și steaua – The Wind and the Star – Nina Cassian

O poezie superba… si ilustratia pe masura!

adropofinspiration

Am descoperit această poezie minunată aparținând interesantei și controversate poete Nina Cassian și am tradus-o in engleză.

I discovered this wonderful poem by the interesting, controversial poet Nina Cassian and I translated it in English.

Da, sunt gata să fiu

vântul viclean, străveziu,

prevestind naufragii –

Și-apoi, pe fantasticul cer

tot eu să fiu steaua de ger

pe care-o văzuseră magii.

*

Da, sunt gata să sparg

corabia ta, catarg cu catarg

și-apoi s-aprind un luceafăr

care, pe ape blajine

să te aducă spre mine

cu-ncredere, teafăr.

wind and star

Yes, I am ready to be

the cunning, clear wind,

harbinger of shipwrecks –

And then, in the fantastic sky

me again the frost star

the mages had seen.

Yes, I am ready to break

your ship, mast by mast

and then to light the morningstar

that, on gentle waters

will bring you to me

in confidence, safe.

Reading Tricks for Kids of Any Age

Nicholas C. Rossis

I recently started a collaboration with Mom’s Favorite Reads; a blog created by author Hannah Howe. I wrote a guest post with reading tricks for kids of any age, which Hannah has kindly hosted on her blog. Below is a brief summary of the article. I hope you’ll enjoy reading the whole post on Mom’s Favorite Reads.

Reading Tricks for Kids of Any Age

Kids' library | From the blog of Nicholas C. Rossis, author of science fiction, the Pearseus epic fantasy series and children's booksAs a dad of a 3-year-old whirlwind, I find myself already asking the question facing most parents: how can I make my child read more and spend less time in front of a screen?

As an author of children books and teen-friendly fantasy books, I also ask myself this question’s flipside: how can I make my books appealing to them?

In the immortal words of Gonzo the Great, if at first you don’t succeed, fail, fail again. In my case, after many trials, failures, and…
